    PHILOSOPHY AND PROCESS

Ersatz Simulacrum makes music for places that never existed and memories no one quite had, genre-indifferent albums built from unlikely instruments and invented histories.

Each release begins with a setting, a story, or a musical possibility. It may imagine a vanished tradition, place unfamiliar instruments in conversation, or follow the emotional shape of an event that never occurred. Genre is treated as material rather than boundary: something to combine, distort, remember incorrectly, and occasionally leave behind.

The music is directed and curated through generative technologies. That process is stated plainly because it is inseparable from the identity of the project, but it is not the subject of every piece. The technology is the means. The album is the work.

Creating an album involves extensive prompting and many generations, followed by a relentless process of listening, selecting, editing, and removal. Promising moments are captured and expanded. Anything that distracts from the central feeling of a piece is cut away. Tracks are then shaped and sequenced so that the album develops as a place, journey, or invented history rather than merely a collection of songs.

The project is informed by a lifelong engagement with music and ethnomusicology, and by an interest in what happens when instruments, traditions, and musical assumptions are placed into unfamiliar relationships.

Ersatz Simulacrum is not an attempt to imitate the identity of a conventional musician. It is a passion project: a continuing search for strange, affecting music that its creator genuinely wants to hear.
